King Aurum’s Castle

This is the most recent version and idea for this castle, as the web comic I’m developing is body horror I wanted this castle to be a lot more organic and grotesque than the past designs. But it also needed to be a clear fortified structure using moving away from sculptures and basic shapes I was more focused with combing skin and webbing with gothic architecture.

This is a series of concept art for a castle in a cold desolate environment. I’ve been working on this to develop the villain of the story in the web comic I’ve been working on. The main thing I’ve kept in mind is to create an atmosphere that is intimidating, mysterious, and a little horrific. That’s why in the later iterations I have more of what’s around the castle rather than just the castle. The destroyed buildings and skeletal remains around the main castle I put there to hint at a story of antiquity and a disaster. I’m also trying to keep in mind silhouette and shape language when designing the castle specifically, specifically the difference with a sharp manufactured edge and what makes something look more organic.

In trying to figure out color and atmosphere I messed around with color for a little while to try and pinpoint more as to what I wanted. Purple and green were the colors I was originally thinking about because most people think of villainy and evil when the colors are put together. The red was more to see what other options and to try for a more subtle color palette.

These were the initial ideas, for the castle to be somewhat closer to a fancy prison complex, that is old. The very first idea had was for the castle to be built on floating islands.
